Today I want to tell you about a unique Ukrainian holiday called Malanka.

It is celebrated on New Year Eve, which is December 31

Malanka is a joyful and colorful celebration that combines folklore, music and tradition.

Malanka has its roots in ancient Slavic customs.

Originally it was a pagan festival celebrating the end of winter and the beginning of new year.

Over time it blended with Cristian traditions and today is a part of Ucrainian Cristmas and New Year season.

During Malanka people dress up in bright costumes and masks.

One of the most popular character is Malanka herself – young woman symbolising good luck and prosperity.

Other characters includes animals, devils and mythical creatures.

Groups of friends or neighbours go from house to house performing humorous skits, songs, and dances.

This custom is called Vodit Malanku – leading Malanka.

People often receive treats and small gifts in return for their performances.

Music plays a major role in the celebration.

Traditional instruments like accordion, flutes and drums accompany lively dances

Everyone joins in, creating festive and joyful atmosphere.

Costumes are colorful and richly decorated.

Masks are used to hide identities and make celebration more playful.

The tradition symbolises fertility, wealth and happiness for the coming year.

Today Malanka celebrated both in vilages and in cities.

Some communities organize large public events with competitions for the best costumes and perfomances.

It is a way to preserve Ukrainian culture and bring people togather
